One of Nelson Mandela’s most famous quotes is that ‘What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead’. To celebrate and continue the legacy of Nelson Mandela, the HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) was determined to make a difference by breaking down barriers through supporting people living with intellectual disabilities by ensuring that they feel recognised, welcomed, loved and appreciated.

On the 29 July 2024, HPP staff, students and its Community Advisory Board visited an NGO, the Umlazi Halfway House.  They have fifteen disabled people living on the premises, supported by a few social workers and other staff. During a previous visit, we found out that there was a great need of basic items. The wish list of the residents included painting of outside walls, a television, heaters, curtains and blankets.

Paint was purchased and as part of our 67 minutes, it was decided to spend time painting the exterior walls, followed by braai lunch with the residents. Various clothing items were also donated. As the van was offloaded, there was such joy and excitement on their faces.  The donated television sparked a joyous display of singing and dancing from the residents.  It was a truly amazing day for both us at HPP and the people from the home.
