Nelson Mandela once said: ‘There can be no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to helping others without expecting anything in return.’ With this in mind and to celebrate Madiba’s legacy, UKZN’s HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) Community Liaison Officer, Mr Phumlani Kunene, identified an orphanage in Umlazi, Masibambaneni Safety Net for Children with Disabilities, to support and spend 67 minutes at for Mandela Day.

‘Run by a mother who had five disabled children who all passed away, the extraordinary woman, Mama Luthuli, decided to open her doors to help the community by taking care of disabled children in the Umlazi area,’ said Kunene.

The orphanage now has 30 youngsters ranging from the age of 1 to 15.

A group from the HPP as well as representatives from the Community Advisory Board visited the orphanage on Mandela Day and delivered mattresses, blankets, nappies, non-perishable food and other supplies, including treat bags for the kids

‘It was an incredibly touching experience to meet the caregivers and see the smiles on the children’s faces, especially when they noticed the bags of chips and marshmallows. What stood out for us is that these children are loved by Mama Luthuli, and they adore her in return,’ Kunene said.

‘Having the opportunity to spend time with the children, singing songs and playing games was a gift and privilege. We would like to thank everyone for their generosity and donations. The heartwarming joy on the faces of the caregivers and kids made it a celebration of Mandela’s legacy for us all,’ said Kunene.
