All researchers / faculty members at HPP are involved in the supervision of Honours, Masters and PhD students, and/or postdoctoral research fellows.
HPP has built collaborations across Africa and has attracted students from diverse African countries including South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria. Trainees have also come from outside Africa, such as from the United States, Europe and Australia. HPP’s students have been very productive, with most publishing their first paper in a peer-reviewed international journal as first authors. Students have a strong and consistent record of research accomplishmentS, publishing as first authors or co-authors over 50 papers over the past 5 years.
Collaborations have been established to enhance the training experience of HPP’s students, with most of them undergoing 3-12 month additional training at various leading international institutions, such as Harvard University, Emory University and University of Oxford.
HPP’s faculty members have contributed to capacity building and nurtured and promoted young talent, including underrepresented groups and women. Many of HPP’s students have won prestigious awards and recognition locally and internationally. The training of PhD students is in line with South Africa’s national policy to grow the biotechnology sector by producing more PhDs. The work is also geared to the development of an HIV vaccine, which would have significant economic and social benefit to South Africa
